Lynn Crandall taking over this week!

I hope everyone had a fabulous Easter weekend!

I have a lot of exciting news to share.

First, One Wrong Move has been nominated for a RONE award. Voting begins May 15 through the 21st. Here’s a link to the review from InD’Tale magazine: http://indtale.com/reviews/suspense-thriller/one-wrong-move

Second, the three books in my standalone series are being bundled into one set! That’s right, you can buy Burn on the Western Slope, Fatal Snag, and Final Mend all in one set for a very low price. Targeted release date is June 19 (the day before my hubby’s birthday!). I’ll share more details and a cover soon.

Last, but certainly not least, I have the lovely Lynn Crandall taking over my blog this week! On Tuesday, we learn about Fierce Hearts: The Complete Series. On Thursday, we’ll learn about Dancing with Detective Danger, and on Friday, we’ll learn about Lynn Crandall herself as she answers some interview questions from me.

Meanwhile, I’ve been busy with my house remodel and gardening. My plants are looking amazing and I’ve already got some jalapenos almost ready for picking. I’m ready for some fresh homemade salsa, garden YUM tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers! And watermelon…YUM.

Here’s to a beautiful week!

When the Masks Come Off…

Today I have Remington Wolfe visiting my blog today! Remington, otherwise known as Wolfe, is a character created by Alexia Adams. You can learn more about him in his story, Masquerading with the Billionaire. I personally thought this was a fun and intriguing interview, and I can’t wait to read the story and learn more about both of these characters! So without further ado, let’s learn more about Remington Wolfe.

Here’s what he’s got to say:

Thank you, Angela for inviting me to stop by your blog today. I’m normally a very private person, despite my frequent appearances in the tabloid newspapers. But falling in love with Kat Smith has changed my life so I appreciate the opportunity to let your readers come to know a different side of me.

Tell me about yourself.
I’m Remington Wolfe, although most people just call me Wolfe. I have an embarrassing middle name that I’ve had stricken from every legal document except my birth certificate. Unfortunately, it took Kat all of five minutes to discover it. My parents died when I was seventeen but as they’d only been shadows in my life it didn’t bother me much. I’m famous for designing jewelry and am currently in a competition to set the gem collection of an Arab royal family.

What intrigues you about this story?
I’m not sure intrigues is the right word, irritates would be more accurate. How dare someone try to sabotage my company by putting malicious code into my software programs? Having to rely on someone else, especially a stranger, to fix the problem is driving me crazy. And when that stranger turns out to be Kat Smith a woman with more question marks in her past than answers… Well, let’s just say before the story is over I will know all her secrets. No matter what it takes to discover the truth behind her beautiful smile.

Who or what is your greatest influence?
Harry Winston is my greatest influence. Like me, he started with a collection of jewels in old-fashioned settings and redesigned them into gorgeous contemporary pieces. Not sure if I’d have gifted the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian though. That is one stunning rock.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one thing with you, what would you take?
My private jet? Although, if Kat were with me I wouldn’t need anything but her.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one song with you, what would you take?
I recently heard “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley and now that’s stuck in my head so I might as well bring that song.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t be so scared of love.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
I’d love to meet Leonardo da Vinci. His talent spanned so many mediums he’s always been a hero of mine.

What’s one thing on your bucket list you haven’t done yet?
I recently slept outside on a hammock in a Russian forest. Can’t say it was on my bucket list to start with but it was an incredible experience. Now that I’ve met Kat, I look forward to many more unexpected adventures, especially holding my firstborn child.

If you could have been the original inventor of any work, creative or otherwise, what would it have been and why?
Total artistic jealousy here, I’d love to have invented Fabergé Eggs. Except then they’d be called Wolfe Eggs and that just sounds wrong.

Thanks for hosting me today, Angela. If any of your blog visitors would like to learn more about me then check out Masquerading with the Billionaire.

Excerpt:
With only ambient light from outside, the room was cloaked in darkness. She stood not a foot from him and he could barely see her outline. Yet he sensed her presence, smelled her delicate fragrance, and the hint of whiskey as she exhaled. Heard the rustle of fabric as she planted her feet farther apart as though preparing for a fight.

“Kat—”

“This is me, Wolfe. I am the dark. I work at night. I spend as much of my time in the Darknet, as above. There is no light in me. My mother wanted me to be something I couldn’t, and when she realized that, she left with my sister who could be the star she needed. My father chose a bottle over me, so I survived by becoming invisible. I put that life behind me five years ago and haven’t looked back. That should be enough for you. If you can’t accept that, then fine. I can recommend three others who will be equally competent at cleaning your systems and finding the saboteur.”

“I deal in precious gems. I run a background check on everyone in my company.” It was the truth, but the information he’d wanted on Kat was more personal, less potential felon.

“If you wanted a criminal record report, you could have asked Liam Manning. He has an up-to-date one he sends to prospective clients. Call off your investigator, Wolfe. If he digs too deep into the darkness, I’ll be sucked back in. I can’t let that happen.”

“Are you in danger?” He reached a hand out and connected with her bare shoulder, her skin cool to his touch, as though she really was out in the cold night air.

She hesitated, and he was torn between pulling her into his arms and taking a step back. The moon moved out from behind a cloud and a shaft of light illuminated them. For a split second, he saw a hint of vulnerability in her eyes before it was gone behind her shield of self-sufficiency.

“No.”

He was tempted to turn the lights back on so he could see her clearly but was afraid of what his own face would reveal. He’d never felt such an attraction to a woman before. More than physical, it was almost magnetic. She pulled him to her.

“I want you.” His voice was just above a whisper, whether due to the darkness or the emotion she was drawing from him, he didn’t care to analyze.

If he hadn’t been touching her, he never would have known she hauled in a deep breath before replying, “To keep working for you?”

“Yes. And in my bed.”

She lifted his hand from her shoulder and after a brief hesitation released it.

“I need to be able to walk away from you at the end of next week without looking back. I’m not sure I’ll be able to do that if we become lovers.”

A Creative 2017

finalmendtour_zps3btmajdn

It’s been a long time since I have blogged, hasn’t it? I hope everyone has had a super fabulous new year and now busy pursuing their goals.

I have a couple of announcements. The first is the banner above, which is a book tour for one of my backlisted books, Final Mend. You can click on the banner to follow the tour. I’m really excited about this tour and am waiting with bated breath, as there are a couple of new reviews and I’m anxious to see them. Also, this tour ends on my BIRTHDAY! Yay!

One of my goals throughout every year is to help other writers, and I haven’t exactly been pursuing that goal lately. But this year, I kicked that off with judging manuscripts that my local RWA chapter is hosting. I both hate and love judging manuscripts. I hate it because what if I’m bored and I don’t to hurt the writer’s feelings. But I love it because it also teaches me how to be a better writer, and helps me to help others.

We’ve had some great entries this year, and I’m excited to see where these entries go. I left a comment on one of the manuscripts that I judged that I thought might be useful for everyone, including me. It’s regarding colons and semi-colons. The bane of my writing. Ugh.

Although it’s grammatically correct, sometimes using a colon or semi-colon tells us there’s an author behind this story, and draws us out of the story. Readers want to read this story as if they are seeing or experiencing it really happening, not as if there’s an author telling us what’s happening.

I have used semi-colons, and even colons because it’s grammatically correct. But the best writing in the world is not grammatically correct. Some grammar is absolutely essential, yes, but other grammar, as in these types of instances, is intrusive.

What do you think?

One of my other pet-peeves in reading? Seeing “she thought”. That is telling. I don’t want to be told what she’s thinking. Get me inside her mind. I don’t particularly like italics for me to be inside a character’s mind either, but that’s all very subjective.

As a writer, it’s difficult to get inside a character’s head, especially if they won’t let you or if the story is new to you. But if you don’t get inside that character’s head, there is no way a reader will, either. So whatever works for you, do it! It will make your story so much stronger.

What works for me varies, and sometimes I have to skip over it and come back to it later, in my editing stage. I’ve just started a new story (yay!) and I’ve got some submitted and also in the editing phases. So I’m hoping to have an active writing year and get some of my stories out there, and out of my head!

Another of my biggest goals, as is every year, is to be CREATIVE!

Until next time, I hope everyone has a super fabulous and creative 2017!

What the Gambler Risks

I’ve got Kristina Knight here on my blog again today with What the Gambler Risks! The first two books in this series are priced at $0.99, but that price ends tomorrow!

9781440595806

Best-selling author Kristina Knight’s Billionaire Cowboys are back for one final ride with this seductive story of long-simmering feelings and hot Vegas nights.

Twenty-something ice queen Sabrina Smith enjoys the fame and fortune she’s found writing self-help books for a largely female audience. Her readers hang on every word of how the Vegas Virgin – an unflattering and inaccurate moniker given to her by a local shock jock – juggles dating, working, and friendships in Sin City.

And that’s why Jase Reeves spells trouble.

Jase knows Sabrina’s secret – that she’s not nearly as cold as she would like people to think – and he’s through keeping it. He didn’t intend to have a one-night stand with the Vegas Virgin, but now he can’t get her out of his head. And he can’t keep living this lie.

With Jase back at the tables in Vegas, Sabrina has one goal: stay away from the handsome gambler before he melts her career – and her heart.

EXCERPT:

“One more hand. Winner buys the loser a drink?”

She tilted her water bottle toward him. “I already have a drink.”

Jase snickered but was careful to keep the sound light and friendly. “That’s not a drink.” He lifted his glass of soda water with lime to his mouth. Most people wouldn’t consider the contents of his glass a real drink, either, but he rarely drank when he played. Alcohol and cards did not mix well in Jase’s opinion. “What do you have to lose?” he pressed.

“We’ll see,” she said, not meeting his gaze directly, and he was 75 percent positive she was on her way to a yes.

The dealer switched decks and then dealt the cards. Jase had random cards in his hands, but he didn’t care. The woman studied her hand, one manicured nail tapping against the cards. Considering.

“Twenty,” she said, throwing a chip on the table.

“Raise to forty,” Jase said, tossing two chips on the table. The best plan of attack when the cards in his hand were useless was to make her think he held something amazing. He didn’t bluff in real card games, but despite her two wins, he didn’t peg this woman as a true card player. If she were a regular player, she wouldn’t be so transparent about what she held in her hands.

The woman blinked, and her teeth began nibbling at her lower lip.

“Are you in?” he asked, a bit more forcefully than was necessary.

Her finger tapped faster against the cards in her hand. “I’ll take three,” she said and slid three cards to the dealer.

As soon as her new cards were in her hands, Jase said, “I’ll stand.” And he stacked his worthless cards with all the careless confidence he used in high-stakes games around the globe. The kind of confidence that made big-time, big-money gamblers think twice about going against him in the second betting round.

The woman circled her index finger around her remaining green chip, considering her options. Call, take the gamble, lose, and have a drink with him. Of course, it would take a truly pitiful hand to lose to what he held. She could fold and have a drink with him. She could also call his bluff and, depending on the cards in her own hand, win. He didn’t like the thought of her winning, but if her winning at the table landed the two of them at the bar, was it really a loss for him?

“Call,” she said, and Jase felt a wave of admiration for his opponent. Which was not good, because if she was calling she had to have something in her hand, and he had a big, fat zero. Which meant she would win. Jase didn’t like to lose, especially at poker, not even when it was a friendly game instead of a high-stakes match with thousands of dollars to lose.

She laid down her cards: three queens, a two, and a ten.

“Three of a kind. Nice.”

“I was hoping for a full house.”

“I was hoping you’d fold, so I could buy you that drink,” he said and laid his cards—all four suits, random order—on the table.

“Nice bluff, I almost folded.”

“If it had been a better bluff, you would have folded.” He watched her for a moment across the table. “Now you have to buy me the drink; all in all, not a bad night at the table.”

The woman pushed back from the table, pulling the pot in the middle to her side. Jase pocketed the chips he had left in his stack. “I never agreed to that bed,” she said, and her hands stilled over the chips. Her gaze flicked to his, and despite the dim light, he saw the flush that crept over her cheeks.

“And here I thought we were just talking about a drink. I have to tell you, I’m not the kind of guy to go off to a strange woman’s hotel room after a lousy hand of poker,” he said with mock outrage.

“Bet. I meant bet.”

What the Heiress Wants

Kristina Knight is joining us today to talk about her May release, What the Heiress Wants. This is the 2nd in her Billionaire Cowboys series. Her third, What the Gambler Risks has recently been released, as well!

Thanks for stopping by, Kristina. Let’s learn more about you and the second book in this series.

What intrigues you about your book?
– What the Heiress Wants is the second book in my Billionaire Cowboys trilogy, and so far my favorite thing about the series is the brothers’ interactions with each other. I wanted to explore that dynamic, and it’s been fun to see how they play off of one another.

When did you absolutely know that you had to be a writer?
– I’ve always known that I wanted to be a writer, but putting that want into action took a while. When I was a kid, and even into my 20s, I really thought that to be an author you had to live in New York or Paris and had to have had these amazing adventures…what I’ve learned is that writers can and do live everywhere and some have had great adventures, and some have never passed the city limits sign. So writing isn’t about where you live or what you’ve done, it’s a bit more internal than that, and I’m glad to stepped out of my comfort zone to do it.

What is your favorite aspect of reading a novel?
– I have a kind of reading routine – I like to cozy up in a corner of our couch with my favorite blanket over my legs (even in the heat of summer!) and with either a cold glass of lemonade (summer) or a hot mug of cocoa (winter). Then I just sink into the story and that sinking in part, that is my favorite part.

Are you a plotter, a pantser, or both?
– I’m definitely both! I’ve found that with deadlines and contracts, I need to have some idea of where I’m going with a book…not because I can’t write without that idea, but because it helps to keep me on track. So I do a really loose outline for directional purposes and then I start writing. Sometimes, the finished book is true to the outline and sometimes it’s quite different. The outline, though, at least points me in the general vicinity!

Do you have a certain theme in all of your novels?
– I do, and it’s all about finding/accepting yourself. I truly believe that we can only love others when we love ourselves. Accepting and coming to terms with our imperfections, whether they are physical or emotional, from a tragic past or a fear of the future, is the key to being able to fully embrace life and the people around us.

Do you ever use your life experiences in your novels?
– For sure! Sometime it’s just a feeling or reaction to an event and sometimes it’s a person or actual event that I fictionalize, but bringing ‘real life’ into a book happens all the time.

Are you working on any projects right now?
– I’m plotting the 3rd book in this series, What the Gambler Risks, which will be out later this year, and I just turned in the first book in a brand new series that I’m really excited about!

Do you see writing as a career?
– Yes, writing is definitely my career. I’m a full time writer, and I love every minute of it!

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.

Thank you for having me over, Angela!

Excerpt:
Connor tilted his head to the side. “Ground rules like?”
“No public displays of affection. When we’re at work, we work. There is a lot to do with the new magazine launch, and we’re still not out of the woods with the existing publications.”

“So you won’t be coming into my office at odd moments with empty file folders and a desperate need for my body?” His beautiful mouth twisted in a wicked smile.

“As the male form goes, yours is quite good. But I think I can control myself between the hours of nine and five.”

“So no nooners. Bummer. Any other rules we should abide by?”

“No nicknames.”

Connor blinked. “I shouldn’t call you Love Muffin within earshot of anyone in the office. Got it.”

“You shouldn’t call me Love Muffin anywhere.”

“No love muffins?”

Miranda wrinkled her nose. “Definitely not.”

“No nooners. No love muffins. So far, so good. Rule number three?”

“We shouldn’t advertise the fact that we had dinner tonight, or any other night. And we shouldn’t mention the kisses from before, either.”

“Damn it, I was planning on talking about that with the pressmen tomorrow.”

Miranda pursed her lips. “I’m serious. This doesn’t have to be a state secret, but we don’t need to advertise the fact that we’ve been on a date, either. At least, not until we know where this is or isn’t going.”

Caturday, and an excerpt!

I generally always have pets of some kind in my novels. Usually cats, because I’m a cat person. I’ve rescued cats and do feral feedings on top of having a few of my own. I love writing about them, and they are easy for me to write.

Beacon

This is Mr. Meowgi, my inspiration for Beacon in One Wrong Move. Notice the clipped ear? It means he was a trap, neuter, and release! Although he is now part of my household, cats with ear-tips are harmless and should be left to live peacefully in the wild.

In celebration of #Caturday and the fact One Wrong Move is still at $0.99, I’m sharing a never before seen excerpt of One Wrong Move!

In this excerpt, Camden has already taken Rayma to a safe house (practically kidnapped, but that’s another except for another day). She is furious with him that she had to leave her cat, Beacon, who received his name when she discovered him beaten on her back porch after she’d moved to the Texas Gulf Coast. She considered him her beacon that she was in the right place.

So in this excerpt, Camden has gone to her house to rescue the cat and bring him to the safe-house where Rayma is staying.

***

“Beacon?” He explored the apartment, trying not to notice the femininity surrounding him. “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty,” he called as he took shorts and shirts from the closet. He found her socks and panties, and stuffed them in a bag. The sooner he got them out of his hands, the better. He found shoes, sandals and her purse and by the time he filled the bag, it wouldn’t close.

He didn’t care. He needed to get out of here, away from the scents, away from her lacy thongs, and away from the tiny dresses hanging in her closet.

When he walked into the kitchen pantry in search of cat food, the cat waltzed up to him and circled his feet. Camden knelt to pet him. Beacon arched his back, purring.

“You hungry? Sorry about that, kiddo. Let’s get you back to your mom.” He found a few cans of food, dropped them into the bag wrapped around his shoulder and grabbed the cat, prepared to leave, when a shadow in the doorway stopped him.

Beacon scrambled from his arms and shot down the hall. Camden dropped the bag. Cans of food banged to the floor. The guy stopped one with his foot as it rolled toward him.

“Who the hell are you?” Camden hooked his thumbs in the loops of his pants, presenting a casual attitude but preparing to pounce if necessary. The guy filled the doorway, and there was nowhere for Camden to go but forward.

“Rayma’s boyfriend.” The guy remained still as a stone in a rippling pond. “Who the hell are you?”

“How did you get in here?” Camden asked. He recognized Dare’s accountant but had to play it cool.

“A key.” The guy held it up for Camden’s inspection, as if that would make the fact more powerful. “How did you?”

“What’s your name?” Camden asked.

“Excuse me. I am the one with the key to Rayma’s house, not you. Why don’t you tell me?”

“She told me she broke up with you weeks ago,” Camden lied.

And how do I plan to celebrate?

By reading STING, by Sandra Brown, of course!

Some people wait for the next Harry Potter. I wait for the next Sandra Brown.

Every year I wait for her next novel, and every year I pre-order her newest story and read it within days (and that’s only because I have to work and, thus, sleep).

I’m very excited to be celebrating One Wrong Move’s release day with Sandra Brown. Although I’m nowhere near close to her success, I have been enamored by her and her stories for decades. She’s a sweet Texas lady (I have had the honor of meeting her very briefly), and I’ve even heard her speak at a writer’s conference. Very inspiring, very beautiful inside and out! Can you tell I have a girl crush, LOL?

I grew up loving to read, and grew up wanting to write.  I knew I’d write romance, but I honestly didn’t know I’d write suspense until I started reading her. Then, everything that was missing in my(never-going-to-see) stories clicked, and I knew I needed to add romance. Shortly afterward (and 18 years ago), I started working at the District Attorney’s Office. That really set the suspense part of my writing in stone. And now here I am, celebrating with the woman who helped inspire me. Okay, we aren’t celebrating together, but I can still do a happy dance!

So happy release day to me with One Wrong Move! And happy release day to Sandra Brown!

Five Facts About One Wrong Move

OneWrongMove3D1. One Wrong Move was published under a pseudonym almost exactly ten years ago! It has been rewritten and edited, and I’m happy to say has found a lovely home with a new publisher.

2. One Wrong Move shares a release date with my favorite author’s newest book: Sting, by Sandra Brown.

3. One Wrong Move is a standalone novel. However, Rayma, the character is this book, was the heroine’s best friend in One Last Hold.

4. One Wrong Move is one of the steamiest books I have written.

5. After publishing One Wrong Move the first time 10 years ago, I made a wrong move and didn’t publish again for many years afterward! I finally got rid of my pseudonym and reevaluated my goals and am happy to say it’s still one of my favorite books yet, but now even better!
